The United Kingdom

The Queen, Big Ben, Churchill, Afternoon Tea, Shakespeare, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Football (Soccer), Stephen Hawking or Harry Potter, maybe it is something darker such as empire building and colonialism or maybe it is a more personal thought?

As an accompanying piece to a similar blog I just posted below about the United States of America what immediately comes into your mind when you think of the United Kingdom?

Stonehenge, The Chunnel, Charles Darwin, Emily Bronte, The Who, "The Rule of Thumb", Charles Dickens, MI6, Ian Fleming "Bond, James Bond"

Freya Ridings - "Lost Without You"

Standin' on the platform
Watching you go
It's like no other pain
I've ever known
To love someone so much
To have no control
You said, "I wanna see the world"
And I said, "Go"
But I think I'm lost without you
I just feel crushed without you
'Cause I've been strong for so long
I never thought how much I needed you
I think I'm lost without you

All of those things. And while not the first thought, there is a recognition of how the UK has historically suffered from multiple personality disorder in its relation with the rest of Europe.

My father was there during the bombing. Was also in France during part of the war. He never talked about it.

If only animals had the ability to know when to keep away from us humans they would be better off.

A sense of loss. I was born there and it brings to mind the loss of many things I once held dear. The last Night of the Proms, Britannia, Jerusalem. They slip farther away...I no longer belong there.

Lions led by donkeys springs to mind about the current state of the nation - mind you, many of the lions are donkeys too! I think that the USA and the UK are standing at a political crossroads at the moment. The wrong choice could send either of them on a very ugly journey.

You missed country pubs!

the players do NOT make a PROFIT on making a statement for equality,
which, as you brought up, you FOUGHT FOR.

the OWNERS are the ones making the money
FIGHTING messages of equality,
because the people being repressed and senselessly killed
ARENT the ones who can afford their prohibitive ticket prices.

if you were black, in your service days,
you would have been second class, even in the service.

you fought for this country for the people to HAVE rights,
not for the country to take them away.

YES, while we were helping them with lend-lease,
but HIDING it from the rest of the world,

we didnt have the guts to join WW2 until the japanese
FORCED us into it.

oh, THEN we were "heroes" and brave and all that . . .

and a decade later, those who WERE brave enough
to fight the nazis and the facists in the 1930s
by joining the only ones who were, the communists,
were blackballed, humiliated and ruined under mccarthyism.

the UK may have had their disagreements
with the continent over the years
but has been a steadier beacon than we have,
even outlawing slavery FOUR DECADES before we did.

bravo and cheers

On the Upside,
The NHS
Country Pubs ( Sadly not at the moment )
Fish and Chips, I need my weekly chippie tea
Our Armed Forces , I was proud to be in the R.A.F. for 14 years.

On the Downside,
Little Englanders that voted to leave the EU I am perhaps prejudiced, having worked in Europe for for many years, for a European Company.

During the 1977-78 academic year, I studied abroad at Leeds University. I travelled extensively in the UK by motorcycle (England, Scotland & Wales...I wanted to go to Ireland also, but couldn't afford the ferry). I absolutely loved my time there and truthfully felt more at home in the UK than in the USA.

(That statement will draw hate comments, I'm sure, which only underscores my sentiments.)

My family (Mother's & Father's sides) left the UK to come to the States in the late 1600s to the early 1700s. The last four years had me thinking about going back to the UK...but then Boris came along. Maybe I should consider New Zealand? LOL
